My teaching philosophy
Sport as a metaphor for life is not a new game. The process of learning any sport is more than just technique because learning is a form of self-awareness and self-expression, a form of intense exploration and revelation. Skiing is a particularly apt metaphor because hurtling down mountains in defiance of gravity has fear as an intrinsic factor, and fear is elemental to life.
Fear of falling while skiing taps into layers of anxiety in our subconscious minds. There is anxiety about falling and embarrassing ourselves, fear about getting hurt, and finally, there is the fear of failing utterly. Life offers us these same dire possibilities every day. Skiing concentrates them in a single moment and thus offers us an opportunity to overcome them.
